In Reply to: Is it Really a Russian Tort? posted by Pamela on September 17, 2001 at 18:54:13:
: I was recently given a new "Russian" tortoise. She looks kind of different from my other Russians. I've seen some pictures of Greek, Hermann's, and Mediterranean Spur-thighed Tortoises that to my untrained eye sometimes look very "Russian", so I was wondering if maybe my new tortise is Not really a Russian after all.
: My new "Russian's" color is different from my other ones... Her skin and shell are more golden in color, her face is more pointy-nosed, the scales on her face are larger and more pronounced, and her shell is also more highly rounded than any of my other Russians.......Are these things just normal variations of a Russian tortoise? Or do you think that she is NOT a Russian, but is possibly one of those "Russian-like" tortoises?
: I know that without a picture, it's possible that no one can really tell me what she is...but I figured that there has to be some sort of site (or person) that could help us neophytes correctly identify these kinds of tortoises from each another.
: Thanks for any help...

Sounds like you got a different tortoise... try some of these sites:
www.tortoise.org
www.tortoisetrust.org
Look for the picture sections for ID of your new 'russian' :)
