First of all, sorry for your loss. Here's a turtle
shell I got from someone that brought it back
from Honduras about 9 years ago. I sprayed it with
many (6-8) coats of polyurethane. I keep it in a large
rubbermade in the attic. I also bought a box
turtle shell at a yard sale for a buck and bleached
and sprayed that too. It's on display on a shelf
amongst hundreds of other turtle ceramics, glass,
etc...decorations. I'd have to point it out, or
nobody would notice it. When I do, people are
amazed and when I show them the inside with the
backbone, they are always surprised about that,
even if they get a slight case of willies, they
still want to SEE IT. Curiosity wins out.
About 2 months ago, while driving I spotted a
box turtle on the side of the road, so I pulled
over and checked. Unfortunantly he had been hit
on the head and was dead. It was a blunt wound,
no mess. The shell was perfect yellow colored
and beautiful. But I left him there and went on.
Now I wish I would have either kicked him off the
road out of sight, so someone ELSE wouldn't stop
maybe too, or kept him for the shell, but I also
didn't really know what to do. I'm mad that I
didn't take him, because using the shell
for educational purpose would have meant he didn't die
in vane. Take care, niki
