PRESS RELEASE-TORTOISES SEIZED IN WESTERN MOJAVE DESERT, CALIFORNIA
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Contact: A. LANCASTER, TORTOISEAID INTERNATIONAL http://tortoiseaid.org

APPLE VALLEY, CALIFORNIA---An anonymous tip regarding an "animal collector" has led to the confiscation of numerous Desert tortoises (Gopherus (Xerobates) agassizii) this afternoon in the Western Mojave Desert. The Desert Tortoise is protected under both state and federal laws.

TortoiseAid International in Apple Valley CA has received 13 of the tortoises, all of which have life-threatening illnesses. It is estimated that an additional 40 to 50 sick tortoises remain at the residence. The California Department of Fish and Game, San Bernardino County Animal Control, the SBC Sheriff's Office are currently in the process of impounding remaining animals.

Illegal possession, propagation, and other charges are pending.

All additional tortoises and other California native herpetofauna seized will be received at TortoiseAid's Sanctuary for triage and immediate emergency veterinary treatment later this evening.

Veterinary supplies are needed badly. Individuals or businesses interested in donating supplies or in volunteering may contact TortoiseAid at (760) 247-0786, or by e-mail at tortoiseaid@tortoiseaid.org

Please allow us time to answer your e-mails, we do have our hands very full here at the moment.
