: I am a former wildlife rehabber and an RVT. I have two wildcaught tortoises that are unreleasable due to sgell injuries. One is a Gulf coast that I have had for about 18 months, another is a three toe that I've had for about 6 months. this evening I went to give them an evening treat of watermelon, and I found a very small hatchling in their water trough. I was sure they were both girls (I'll check this more closely in the morning). Will species interbreed? or could there be some other explanation? I would appreciate any and all help, as I'm a little unfamiliar with the care of new hatchlings.
: Thanks! Oh yes I live in the south Texas area if that helps.
One warning, don't keep the baby with the adults... they WILL cannibalize their own babies given the right chance. Also review the box turtle forum here on kingsnake, there have been many posts about caring for baby boxies the past month or two.
