I found it easiest to keep hatchlings on short pyle indoor/outdoor carpeting or even just cloth. Another option is a soil/sand mixture 50/50 mix. Then many keepers, actually the most successful breeders keep them on crushed oyster shell. (even the hatchlings) I don't suggest this because it's probably rough on the little guys legs.
Important points. I now suggest soaking daily with a water bowl present at all times. Also provide a moist microhabitat where it can retreat to. Keep the temperatures at 75 to 95. That is, try to provide that range.
