: I am considering getting a Hermanns tortoise and was wondering which race is more hardy (eastern or western). I live in Central NJ and I keep/breed Eastern Box Turtles. I know I have to keep them separated, however, I would like to keep them outside from May to October and hibernate them inside via refrigerator.

: Can anyone help?

I'll be getting some t. hermanii hermanii (Western) hatchlings next week, I'm getting them because they are smaller as adults. As far as hardiness, I'm not sure, I live in MA. Try asking at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/hermann-tortoise, these folks know a lot more :)

Good luck!
