In Reply to: Dog attacked tortoise!! :( posted by amber on September 08, 2001 at 15:31:35:

: my 4" tortoise was attacked by my dog this morning. Her shell was punctured on the lower right part of her shell and she was bleeding. I quickly brought her inside and washed her off and put her in her inside aquarium. I put in some freshly cut tomatoes and she came out of her shell, and started walking around her tank. She still seems a little shook up but fortunelty she is alive.

: What should I do about her shell? Any antiobiotics to help keep it from being infected? Please respond soon!

Definitely don't put her in contact with the dog anymore. Keep her comfortable. Keep an eye on the injury, they are tough animals, so she should be ok. . Use antibiotic CREME, not ointment (there is a difference) ointment is oily, like petroleum jelly, creme is more white. Keep this on the wound for a week or so, then use less and less. Is it a BIG puncture, or fairly small? if it starts smelling bad, or she acts oddly, take her to the vet immediately.
