-Here is the best illustration I could find. It is out of 'Revision of the African Cryptodira', Loveridge and Williams, 1957. This is still one of the best references on African Tortoises.
-The 2 on the right are babcocki. So size can be thrown out as a criteria. G p babcocki in Somolia are up to 43Kg or roughly 90 lbs. This is one criteria to split them. The Somolian animals are babcocki. So the size thing is invalid.
-The best way you can tell is to KNOW where they came from or the hatchlings. The animal on the left is the SA form. You can see the distinctive difference. Now, there are intergrades. That makes it more interesting.
-For the most part though the SA form also usually lays smaller more numerous eggs.
-If you've seen enough SA forms you will see a slight difference in the adult pattern but its very hard to describe.
