I use cypress mulch and soil but not potting soil. It contains those little white pieces. They are no good for tortoises to eat. Use the soil you would use for outside. If you use bagged mulch soil watch for foreign objects. I pulled two pieces of glass out of a bag of the stuff.

: I have used cypress mulch and moisture does not seem to be a problem for indoor settings. It drys out nicely. Just start out with dry mulch to reduce the initial amount of moisture your Russians must endure.

: The only problem seems to be keeping it clean. Russians defecate a lot and the brown stuff mixes in the mulch and requires more work to detect it and clean it out.
