I have used cypress mulch and moisture does not seem to be a problem for indoor settings. It drys out nicely. Just start out with dry mulch to reduce the initial amount of moisture your Russians must endure.
The only problem seems to be keeping it clean. Russians defecate a lot and the brown stuff mixes in the mulch and requires more work to detect it and clean it out.
