I've had a Russian tortoises for almost 3 yrs. I now have a total of 4.

They don't seem to enjoy being picked up. They will flail their legs and crane their necks.

If you do pick one up, don't grab them from above and lift them straight up. Place one hand underneath the animal. Otherwise it might seem as if they are being snatched up by a predator.

Either way, tortoise seem to prefer being on solid ground. Sometimes they will tolerate being stroked under the chin or on top of the head. I basically let them run around without too much interference from me. Sometimes they will follow me around, waiting for food. Most of the time they just accept my presence as the bringer-of-food.
