When I got mine he was heavily pyramided and these scutes were almost touching, after some time and a serious diet change, the scutes grew far apart and straightened out as they were growing crooked also. Needless to say, he was very messy, but be rest assured they're mess makers no matter what.

What it the diet like?
: If stools are wet, there is too much green or wet food in his/her diet.
: Add some dry stuff like grass or hay and it should firm up and come out cleaner, so to speak.
