They are a real species. They are Testudo greaca.
Now the hard part. If you want to tag on a subspecies you have to know where they came from.
Personally, I believe they came from Morocco or the western part of the greaca range. You do have to keep in mind that they came from the pet trade and a dealer or shipper is not going to tell you where they came from. (for real)
