The Russian tortoise, Testudo horsfieldi, is a small species of tortoise that comes from the area near the Caspian Sea down to Pakistan and to the east near China. It gets to about 8-9" max. It lives in dry conditions and is completely herbivorous.
The three-toed box turtle, Terrapene carolina triungus, resides in the eastern half of the United States in and around forests, fields, etc. It needs humid micro-climates and water. It is an omnivore, eating both plant and animal matter. It too is relatively small, getting around 5-6" in length.
Most specimens found in the pet trade, of either species, are wild caught and can be very difficult to maintain. See www.tortoisetrust.org for further details on care.
