I also live in So Cal and it doesn't get either too warm or too cold, but every year my russians hibernate from November till March. They dig under the soil in their enclosure and I just cover the top with wood so rain will run off and not make their soil too wet while they sleep. This has woeked successfully for the past 5 years. They seem to know how to take care of themselves.
Also, if you can I suggest a wooden enclosure. Make it out of 6' fence boards. Three boards high makes a great & inexpensive enclosure. If you do use a pool be sure not to plant anything too close to the edge. Little russians are great climbers, and poof! They escape by climbing up the bushes and over the top. Hope this helps. Zab
: I live in southern california and i was wondering if i can keep a russian tortoise outside all year round without additional heating. Also the tortoise i am looking to buy is about 3-4 inches long and i want to know if a 42x22x18 rubermaid container would be ok until i can get a large childrens wading pool. thanks
