Hi Casey,
Russians seem to be fairly easy if they are healthy to begin with.
They are small, friendly, and usually good eaters.
Most for sale in the retail trade are wild caught and can have a multitude of health issues. High parasite loads, respiratory illness, and a strain of herpes are things that can plague recent imports.
If you buy one, look for one that is active, has dry, clear eyes and nostrils, and feels heavy when you pick it up.
Sick tortoises may be lethargic, have runny or crusted eyes, feel very light in weight, etc.
Here is a link to a good Russian care site
The Russian Tortoise web page http://www.russiantortoise.net
And a russian discussion group on Yahoogroups.

They are adorable and addicting tortoises to keep.
Once you do get one, take it for an immediate vet trip for a check up and for deworming.
Good luck!
Heather
