I think they're probably springtails. Today I read more about these little creatures than anybody ever ought to. The bottom line is they're harmless (if not more than just a wee bit gross).

Yesterday I scooped out the mulch where the infestation was heaviest into a bowl & microwaved it for a couple of minutes. That was just long enough to flush them out of the mulch. I looked on in fascination & horror as thousands of tiny bugs scurried around the rim of the bowl & on the inside of my 20 year old Goldstar microwave oven.

F.Y.I. It takes about 5 minutes on HIGH to kill springtails.

I realize that I'll probably never get rid of them all, short of changing out the mulch, but I sure put a big dent in their colony. Now I know they're harmless so I've come to think of them in a whole different light. Yet I forsee thinning out their ranks occasionally. I also had good reason to thouroughly clean the microwave.
