Hi there!

I think they may be wood mites. I have the same problem in my Chinese Box turtles pen. I was told on the turtle forum that they are harmless and even beneficial because they keep the wood clean. I believe they can be killed by baking the mulch (not sure how you'd want to do this). I've linked my post on the turtle forum so you cna check out the response I got.

: Today I discovered a multitude of tiny bugs living in the cypress mulch in my redfoot's pen. They are smaller than a period, a medium gray in color, & seem to be confined mostly to the area around the clay saucer used as a water dish.

: Anyone have any idea what these things are & if they're harmful? And how to get rid of them short of replacing all of the mulch in his pen?
