The price varies depending on what part of the country you live and if you purchase from a breeder, pet shop, etc. This is the best (cheapest) time of year to purchase as there are many hatchlings available. During the winter prices climb.
Breeder sell individual tortoises (African Spurred) for about $45 to $55. Shipping and health inspections can double that price.
Shipping is not really a problem for the tortoises. I have shipped many and never had a problem, even when a hurricane delayed shipment several days. If the tortoise is healthy when shipped, it will arrive fine.
Good luck,
Jerry
