One of the main reasons Gopher Tortoises are so difficult to maintain in captivity is their need to burrow. It is not a convenience to beat the heat for them. It is an ingrained need and some of those burrows extend for 65 feet or more! Most people live in an urban setting where their backyard will not support an enclosure that contains a 65 foot-long, in whatever direction they choose, burrow. They can burrow under just about anything in almost nothing flat.
