First, THANK YOU VERY MUCH for your help!
I bought the exact soil you recommended on the way home from work; prior to reading your posting.
I should have the UVB light installed and the substrate mixture in by New Years Day.
The dry vitamin I am providing is T-Rex brand, "Herbivorous Reptile Formula", "2:1 Calcium/Phosphorus Powdered Supplement with Vitamins". It says something about how important it is to maintain the ratio noted above (calcium/phosphorus) for proper use of the calcium by the tortoise. I read your care sheet and the brand you recommend is phosphorous free. The T-Rex brand, like the Tri-Cal, has three forms of calcium; dicalcium phosphate, bone ash, and calcium carbonate, and provides vitamin D3 and other vitamins. Unless you recommend differently, I will use this till it runs out and then find the Tri-Cal.
Can I feed green onions? Are there any standard (available at any nursery) house plants that I can put in the enclosure? Not that I want the tortoise to eat. I just want to add some variety to the brown substrate and the white walls.
There is a posting just above this one, about feeding on a rock. That's what I do. Since my tortoise is so small it was having a hard time getting over the lip of the food dish that I bought so I started feeding on a piece of flat rock. It also has a tough time with the lip of the water dish. So I fill it rather low so that when it does get in it won’t drown. Although I’ve never seen it drink. I don’t think that the water is really an issue because I soak every other day.
By the way, in my initial posting I think I said the tortoise was a few months old and 4 inches long. Well, today I actually got out a tape measure. It’s exactly 3 1/4 inches along the bottom shell and 4 1/4 inches across the top shell. Can you take a guess at it’s age? Was a few months close?
