If you can provide a grazing area, that of course is preferred. Once again, what is 'best' is anybodys guess. I've raised tortoises on grocery greens and grazing with no obvious difference. I've seen some gorgious tortoises raised on the most terrible diets. All I can say is I don't know. Once again, variety seems to make it easier. Sulcatas and leopards are grazers and grasses and perenials are probably best but you can do just as well with grocery greens if you pay attention to what you are feeding and mix it up as best you can. Now the grocery greens I feed to the younger tortoises are the top 2 - 3 inches of the plant. The rest goes to the guys outside as an occasional treat. So the stuff I feed is the very dark part and low moisture content (as far as grocery greens go) this works pretty well for me and my tortoises.
