Considering how widely ranging the species is, variations in color, size, and habitat preferences are to be expected. I would like to see proof of osteological and other structuaral differences, if you have it.

I certainly have it. You can take a look at the 'taxonomy' section on the Tortoise Trust website for starters. As for regional variations, certainly, some are due to localised climatic factors (the variation seen within Morocco, for example at varying altitudes). However - for anyone to claim that the tortoises of, for example, Central Algeria (whitei) and the tortoises of Tunisia are the same species is totally absurd. They cannot even physically mate together! Egg sizes/clutch densities re different. One weighs 400 grams as a reproductive adult. The other 6 Kg!!!! As large, in fact, as a typical California Desert tortoise. It's entire physical appearence is instantaneously recognisable (to those that have actually seen them, that is) and the hatchlings are also entirely different. Yes - we do have excelleent photos of entire series of animals. Some of these appeared on the aforementioned CD-ROM. Take a look before you reach any conclusions.
