: I've heard many references to people's torts getting bladder stones on this message board. It got me thinking, how do you know if your tort has or might have a bladder stone? Any specific signs to watch out for? Thanks all.

Symptoms can be straining to urinate, reduced amount of ureates passed, blood in the urates(can also be seen with Hexamita parva), dragging of the hind legs due to the stone pressing on the nerves that control the hind legs. The easiest way to know for sure is to have a radiograph or an ultrasound performed. Most people avoid using screening radiographs due to the cost of them and sadly to the fact that many(not all)keepers would rather not know if their tortoise is developing a problem until it is really bad.
