I have a male Hermans tort who's frontmost carapace scute is completely gone. He lives outside in a pen and basks daily and eats well and is otherwise healthy.
It was that way when I bought it but I was assured that it was cured because of the healthy tissue/shell that was growing there. There was and still is no bleeding or wetness.
Anyway, 3 months later the edges of the surrounding scutes are affected and starting to flake off and there is a crusty off white matter underneath. I believe this is pus, and I think this is what we call dry shell rot.
The frontmost scute area does still have healthy tissue. Because of this obvious progression, I took him to a Vet. Vet's advice follows:
Each day, scrub affected area with a toothbrush to loosen/remove crust. Then apply neosporin to entire area.
If not better in two weeks then it will be considered as a systemic infection, and treated accordingly which I assume means oral or injectable antibiotics.
Does this treatment method sound right?
