About three years ago, I traded a few animals to a guy in exchange for 2 baby Leopard Torts. The day after I shipped out my animals, the other party informed me, only one leopard was availlable, so he gave me a Ornate Wood Turtle to cover the other one. Things went downhill from there. The airborne express carrier walked to my door the next day and tossed the box about 5 feet onto my front entrance way. My new leopard Jermiah was only my second leopard tortoise. He was less than an inch long and turned out to be a very stubborn little tortoise. Over the course of a year, he ate barely enough to sustain life, neither I nor my vet could understand why my lil lep would not eat. Over a year later I purchased 2 baby sulcatas. For no real reason, I decided to place Jermiah in with the 2 Sulcatas. No more than a week later he had adopted the attitude of the 2 sulcatas, he would usually dominate the food bowl and eat far more than his share. Two years later, he still resides with those 2 Sulcatas, upon moving to Arizona I seperated him from the Sulcatas, unfortunately he began his old habits, he would only pick at food and acted lethargic. Back in he went with his more aggressive counterparts. I would not say that everybody should mix species, however tortoises are more social than we sometimes give them credit for.
