They are not quite as delicate as I guess you have heard. However babies grow incredibly fast. I like to expose mine to natural unfiltered sunlight. If you can provide a large enough home, they can get up to 8-10 inches, for them and some exposure to natural sunlight, you should not have that big of a problem. In case of power outage have a styrofoam box and a few shipping heat packs ready. DISCLAIMER If this is your first tortoise you may want to think about another species though. Try Greeks, Hermans, or c.b. Russians, you will have a longer lived and hardier pet.
