Hi Lisa.
Captive bred Russian Torts are still very uncommon.Only recently are more people becoming serious about breeding them.
As the wild caught Russian torts reach breeding age (most new imports are still sexually imature) and more people breed them, captive bred Russians will hopfully become far more readily available.
Only when this happens will the import of wild caught Russians decrease.
Your tortoise is lucky, it's found its way to somebody who has taken the time to do some research into his care.
And make sure he gets that all important vet check.
Don't feel too bad about having a wild caught tortoise. Most pet stores don't advertise the fact ,some even deny it when asked.
You weren't to know.
I did know that my pair were wild caught, but I hope to breed them.Hopefully someday there will be enough captive bred Russians available to make the huge number of wild caught Russians imported each year, a thing of the past.
Terry.
