Now, when I first read the original report I was as appalled as the next person but at the same time I couldn't help but wonder what would illicit such a horrendous and extreme response.
Having lived in Mississippi for a year and having done some extensive hunting(for photography) in the area I had the pleasure of meeting quite a spread of the local people. The last thing anyone wants is some 'bleeding heart liberal' telling them what they can and cant do. What this does is shut down the lines of communication. Not very productive if you are trying to communicate to people, who can give a damn about some shelled critter, that there are people who care about natures creatures and would actually like to give them a little space on Gods green earth.
If you really want to make an impact, calmly, rationally and collectively get together and form a front and show this people in a peaceful manor that you care. Getting up in a persons face or eliminating what a person thinks is his or her 'right' without their participation will only produce the kind of response you see here.
I've been introduced to this organization, Conservation International, which some of you might be interested in. The ideas the coordinator presented at the 2001 IHS were very exciting from a hobbyist standpoint. For those of you who would like to see what you can do in a rational manor check out the web site at www.conservation.org
This group coordinates efforts with local groups to form a united front to speak as one strong voice as opposed to a lot of little voices.
The important point is that nothing is accomplished through confrontation but can be achieved through education. Contact me privately or on list for more info.
