: The gender of a Russian tortoise can be difficult until they are around 4 1/2 inches long. They do not develope concavity in their plastron. The males have a very long tail that they carry to the side. A female has a short stubby tail that is usually carried centrally. I have two torts that I thought were female at 4 inches only to surprise me a year or two later as they grew. If your tort has a long tail carried sideways at this point, it is a boy.
