In some cases a purchase can be considered a rescue and more.
I purchased a very sick box turtle from a local store.
At first glance I thought she was dead.
This is what she was infact suffering from, mouth rot, respiratory infection, parasite infestation. She also had 5- 2" long abscesses on her legs and tail area, she was dehydrated and gravid.
The store employee told me that she was fine, just needed a bit of sun!!!
I bought the turtle and took her straight to my vet.He gave me a copy of his write up on her which I took to the humane society.
He stated that without veterinary treatment she would have died within a week.
The store was investigated on that evidence of neglect and is no longer allowed to sell box turtles.
The remaining turtles were taken from the store and rehabbed.
The female I took, laid her eggs, all eight hatched!
She was recovered within a few weeks, after a course of baytril, treatment for her abscesses ,mouth rinses, soaks in dilute betadine and lots of TLC.
If you buy a very sick turtle/tortoise in order to rescue it, make sure you follow up.
A detailed vet report taken to the authorities, photos etc.
Terry.
