The borax works by killing their intestinal floura. The soap in borax will some times strip their cuticle of is protective wax coating drying out the ant.
Gritts actually will not work. All it could do is block the ants trail and forget about where food inside was or satisfy their carb needs and not need to go to that location for a very long time. Making you think the nest is dead.
