I just got this tortoise last night and the previous owner said he trimmed the beak and said I would need to do the sides. the sides are growing over the bottom jaw. The acutal beak (front of his nose)is okay. I know I should look for a vet to do it but what should I expect him to do? Will cuttle bone help smooth down the sides so maybe I won't need to do anything?

My leopards spent the winter mostly indoors, eating grocery greens and their beaks really frew. After they went out in the yard for the spring/summer, they ate coarser foods and they like to scrape at the cuttle bone. It worked it down really fast. I hate to take drastic steps like having it trimmed. It's too un-natural.
