Start out with something that isn't too expensive and is easy to care for. The common box turtle comes to mind. Or a Russian Tortoise which reminds me a lot of box turtles. Don't go hog wild and find out that this type of reptile isn't for you. That is why these reptile homes are so full all the time. As far as the kids go, my 3 year old is in and out of the pens all the times and my old Desert Torts love her. The only torts I would think that you would need to be careful of are the water turtles because they can and do bite. Good Luck!
