Males are very agressive. The shell biting you are seeing is very common. The males bite around the front legs, face, and shell to get the females to submit. This type of activity can go on for years before your female gets pregnant. If she isn't at least 13 cm straight carapace length, then she isn't old enough to become pregnant. She is most likely hiding more because the male is bothering her.
