Gosh Karl, I'm so sorry to hear about the colony. I feel the same way that you do about this. Turtles and torts are protected from about everything but development...which is what is destroying them...and yet laws forbid us from helping them.
I know of a kid who has been almost in hysterics from finding box turtles that have been burnt, crushed, and injured by land clearing for future development next to his home. He finds them in his yard and is trying to help them.... it's so sad.
: Last month while out hunting rattlesnakes (my passion), I came across a wonderful colony of Gopher Tortoises (different from post below). I took my wife out to see them and this fellow obliged us by posing for a picture. The next week, when we went back to visit, the area had been bulldozed, presumably to clear the area for a housing developement. I am so happy (HEAVY SARCASM) that these beautiful tortoises are protected from unscrupulous herp lovers like myself and my wife. It is a shame that bulldozers apparently fall into the "natural predation" category!
