I live in Phoenix and keep and breed Russian tortoises. They do fine outside year round. They will eat the burmuda grass and just about anything else they come across. They are like little tanks, they are friendly and a great choice.
They do need a hide box, log, deep grass where they can get out of the sun and for hibernation in the winter. They are also excellent climbers and they will dig.
