Hi
In today's NY Times it was announced that Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge's
(part of Gateway National Park) saltwater marshes are disappearing at an
incredible rate and no one knows why. (Estimated life expectancy is five
years)
The Bay is the site of one of the most remarkable comebacks of D. terrapins,
(In the 60s the Bay was ecologically dead.) especially in a metropolitan
area. (Can't get more metropolitan than in the shadow of JFK)
For those interested I've reprinted the first two paragraphs of the article
below, the rest can be read at
http://www.nytimes.com/2001/07/06/nyregion/06MARS.html
If they ask for a registration number (which they might after today,
registration is free) Payment to see the article is only necessary after 7
days after publication.
If anyone has any ideas on why, I'm sure they would like to hear about it.

Scientists Are Baffled by Loss of Marsh From Jamaica Bay
By BARBARA STEWART
The New York Times
Thousands of acres of marshy islands in Jamaica Bay, which provide nesting
and feeding areas for vast populations of birds and other wildlife, are
rapidly, mysteriously vanishing.According to scientists who met recently to
study the problem, the marshes, which are crucial to wildlife and to the
bay's ecology, will disappear in less than 20 years if a solution is not
found. But at this point, scientists, who called the disappearing marshlands
an emergency, do not know what is causing such rapid erosion, which seems to
be unknown elsewhere in the New York metropolitan region and rare anyplace.
