Two of my 28-year-old Desert Tortoises just laid unfertilized eggs! I didn't know they did that! One of them laid 3, then acted strange (agitated) for two weeks, and finally stopped eating and drinking. I took her to the vet, who x-rayed her, found 4 bound-up eggs, and gave her an injection to "induce labor" -- fortunately, this worked! Getting to my questions:
1) Is it commomn for them to lay unfertilized eggs? Should we anticipate this to continue? Should we go have them x-rayed every time they start acting "antsy"?
2) What would be the consequences for an egg-bound female if no one were there to take her to a vet?
