Sand blasting sand is graded sand. That is the particles are of a very particular size measured in microns. The stuff at Home Depot is usually about 5 microns (I think)(don't hold me to it) Anyway it is fine. Silica is nothing more than glass. Taking it to the next extreme it has been determined to be a carcenogen. (what hasn't)
Bottom line, it is no worse than the dirt they are found in.
