You have to do a reality check when dealing with Florida Gopher Tortoises. First of all, you risk the health of your other torts by absent-mindedly handling (an apparently healthy) gopher and then handling the others. Next, there's a hefty fine for having one without a permit, I think it's $10,000. And if dollar signs don't convince you to maintain a hands-off position when it comes to gophers, maybe facing five years in jail will. I understand that around here in Palm Beach County in the 1960's the biggest problem for the gophers was hungry humans, as the torts were used routinely as a food source. Guess what, the story hasn't changed much, it's still hungry humans after the gophers, only now it's a hunger that land developers have for profit. It's a lose-lose situation...
