In Reply to: Sulcatas and Fire Ants??? posted by Derek on June 11, 2001 at 13:27:20:
I dont have fire ants in Wisconsin. However I am some what familiar with their control.
One option would be to use Diatomaceous Earth as a perimeter barrier. You can get D.E. from some of your better horse farms that feed organic feed to their horses. This is added as a supliment. Do not use swimming pool D.E. this has dangerous levels of crystiline silica.
The other option is to look into buying a fire ant bait with abamectins in it. This is a fungal by product that is terror on fire ants. You may find these baits at a pest control companies retail store or a better lawn and garden center.
I would avoid any chemicals or chemical based baits. If your torts eat any ant that has come in contact, this could cause obviuos problems.
Avoid active ingredients such as Dursban (chlorpyrophos) Diazinon, Malithion to name a few.(pardon spelling of these chems)
Nothing will replace good house keeping.Avoid leaving food out for very long etc...
Good luck

: I am building a outside pin for my two sulcatas and I live near Houston, Texas where fire ants are real bad. I was wondering if any one had any suggestions of how to keep the ants away or kill them that will not harm my sulcatas. Any help is greatly appreciated. I don't want anything to happen to them. Let me know.
