It's okay to purchase one if you are sure you can keep it for life. That is what you should think about when purchasing. If you live anywhere in the country besides the west or the southwest (and some places in the south) it will be extremely difficult for you to keep this animal properly. This is the largest mainland land tortoise in the world. At full size, it's very impractical (probably close to improbable) to keep one in your house...make sure you know what you are getting into. Most people think they know, but they discover they didn't know enough. My advice is to read up as much as you can and join some sulcata-oriented listservs at Yahoogroups.com (Sulcatastation, AFrican Tortoise, and Sulcata are some good ones) and learn. Make an informed purchase and get set up ahead of time with supplies and housing for the tortoise...
