Hello, I am a 17 year old tortoise enthusiast.I rescued a Testudo kleinmanni (Egyptian Tortoise) in 1997 and currently is very active and a hardy little fellow. Then in 1999 I recieved another kleinmanni and it too is doing well. I have read numerous posts, on this forum and others, saying that kleinmanni's are extremely hard to take care of, have no personalities, and sleep for 22 ours a day. I would like to clarify that this is not true in the four years I have had kleinmanni's. I found that they have a schedule where they wake up, eat and sleep. One klein is shy, while the other is curious and likes to examine the new environment. In the 4 years I have had the tortoises, only once were they sick.
I believe that they can be good pets for beginners if you have the motivation to take care of them. They remain small -- 4 inches at max (about 210 g), have a nice shell and a huge personality. The only drawback I can see is that they are expensive and hard to find.
I just felt like I had to clear up the thing were these tortoise "suck", and tell people the truth.
