I can imagine what they are for and it's a neat idea.

: Hi, I've got a nearly 2 year old Sulcata, and this is
: his current set up. I always leave a waterbowl, very
: shallow plant saucer that's wider at the bottom than
: at the top like a volcano. He also goes and drinks
: most mornings, I change his water bowl daily.
: A cage where the water bowl is getting dirty or
: being walked through, or making the cage too humid,
: is probably too small anyways, so keeping a water
: bowl in it does not cause problems in itself.
: I do soak my tortoise weekly (in the winter) now he's
: just getting the sprinkler and is outside most of
: the day.
: I DON'T want him defecating in the water (yuck!)
: and he never does. It's bath time sheesh!
: While this may work for a while with young tortoises,
: I'm not looking forward to hauling a big heavy
: tortoise into a wash basin of water to get him
: to eliminate. He goes every morning after basking
: for a while and then walks away from it until it's
: cleaned up! In the summer he goes outside.
: I have allowed him to roam the house on occasion
: with supervision and in nearly 2 years we have
: not had a single "accident".
: As to the cuttlebone - I left some in his cage,
: which he never touches, and have some that I use
: a sharp knife and scrape some over his food maybe
: weekly. I also have Rep-Cal and Herptivite for
: the summer once a week and more often in the winter.
: I would suggest looking into the ACTIVE UV lights
: for sale if you can't get him into regular sunlight,
: much more output than the "old-fashioned" tubes
: such as Repti-Sun 5.0 etc...
: take care, niki & teddy
