Point well taken Marissa, Thanks. I saw a young gopher tortoise die of bladder stone years ago.
: As a followup to my own comments, I didn't soak my sulcata often enough (before I knew anything about the species) and the tortoise developed a fairly large bladder stone due to urates crystallizing in the urine from being dehydrated. After 8 months of soaking on a daily basis, the stone miraculously passed, much to my surprise and the surprise of my very experienced herp vet. I don't know about how everyone else keeps their torts, but I don't intend to chance that again. So, if soaking weekly is a way that I can be sure my tortoise is hydrated, I'll do it. Andrew, I'm not saying you are right or I am, but my advice comes based on my own experiences and the info I've obtained from "experts" in the field. Soaking weekly certainly can't harm the tortoise, so I'd personally rather be safe than sorry...again! Hope this clarifies this a bit more...-Marissa
