Karl,
if you want a large shade tree, plant a mulberry tree.
I have one in my back yard (Hawaii) and the leaves are an excellent food for tortoises.
My sulcatas hang out under the mulberry tree when I'm in the yard, as I always pick the leaves off for them.If I go anywhere near the tree, they plod over hoping for a hand out!
I also trim off whole young branches and the sulcatas strip all the leaves off, they love them.
The tree recovers remarkably quickly and just keeps on growing.
My bigger sulcatas would totally destroy the hibiscus, or as much as they could reach of the plant.
So I grow my hibiscus out of the tortoises yard, I pick all the flowers from 10 hibiscus daily and give them to the torts. They eat every single flower, never leaving even one uneaten.
When I trim the hibiscus, they get all the branches too. They strip them off the leaves, as they do to the mulberry branches.
Terry.
