Hi,
as suggested a vet visit including fecal float is
the most important thing for any new Russian Tortoise.
Certain drugs that are safe with other reptiles, can be lethal to tortoises.
IVERMECTIN is one of those drugs, while safe for snakes,it will kill a tortoise.
I live in Hawaii and keep Russians, thay do well here. My pair lives outdoors year round in a 20'-10' enclosure.
Some important things to keep in mind when building/planting the enclosure.
Make sure there is plenty of shade. The tortoise will retreat to the shade during the hottest part of the day.
Try to build the enclosure in an area that recieves morning sun and late afternoon sun,
But is fairly shady during the hottest hours.
Make sure that the enclosure isn't built in an area that floods during rains, or gets soaked at night by lawn sprinklers.
Russians can't tolerate damp conditions.
Make sure there is shelter, somewhere the tortoise can retreat to at night.
Big bushes etc, and make the enclosure interesting with large rocks, lopgs and edible landscaping.
Sink the bottom walls in at least 6" or better still deeper, to prevent the tortoise digging out.
And make sure the walls are high enough that it can't climb out. Don't place anything near the walls, it could use to climb up and over!!
Please post again if you have more specific questions.
