I used to hatch snake and lizard eggs for the most part. So I figured tortoise eggs were the same. WRONG. If the humidity is too high they explode. The desert and arid tortoise eggs should be kept on the dry side 1:3 by weight water to substrate. For graeca and kleinmanni, sand. Either silica sand or playsand. I've had the best results with those eggs on that substrate.
: Would you suggest the sand substrate on kleinmanni eggs? My friend breeds these but gets few to hatch and he uses vermiculite. He was wondering if he should switch to a different substrate. Thanks for any info.
