To justify Ed’s shipping costs a little I assume Ed is providing the USDA required health certificate with his leopard tortoises. Many shippers are not including this health certificate with their shipments, which is a violation of Federal law.
Other shippers get a volume rate from their veterinarians (for health certificates), which most hobbyists can’t get. Airborne rates go by zones now. Ed is on the west coast (San Diego). Shipping from San Diego to the northeast is expensive especially when you figure the dimensional weight that Airborne uses. A standard tropical fish shipping box would be charged for 16 pounds even if the weight were only 4 pounds.
Incidentally costs for breeding reptiles continue to climb. Combined with a 45% increase in utilities (and California thought they had it bad) and the coldest winter we have had in 6 years, the utility bill for my animal facility was almost $800 in January.
Come on Ed. Only charge $30 for shipping and mark the tortoise up to $145!
